Huawei B593 (4G modem/router) branded by Tele2

Since I’m moving soon with my parents, to a place without fiber connection, I’ve been playing with this thing.

ADSL which is still very popular in Sweden, is simply not an option. For starters it sucks, secondly it’s expensive, and last but not least it’s not stable.
So, I’ve been pretty optimistic about 4G since the telco’s here started developing it, but I’ve had my concerns.

Turns out it works great – so far I’ve seen speeds at 30 mbps down and 10 up, and very good response times. Not even comparable to 3G.

Currently we pay for 25 mbps and 30 gigabytes of data per month (Tele2′s mobile broadband “large”), which worries me a bit. I can live with 30 mbps, but not 30 gigabytes.
They do have another monthly plan though – up to 80 mbps and 80 gigabytes of traffic, which is better, but still only allows you to use about 2-3 GB’s of internet traffic per day.

(From now on I’ll have to plan carefully when I should download ISO’s of OS-distributions)

Pros  (Tele2, Huawei B593 and 4G in general):

• Good response times (lower than ADSL and in the league of cable and fiber)
• Reasonably priced. Prices range from around 200 SEK/month to 500
• Good speed – up to 80 mbps down and half of that up. A friend of mine has confirmed this
• No installation fee
• Trivial for non-technical users

• Bandwidth cap – the most you can get is 100 GB per month by Telenor
• Huawei B593 gives you no choice to turn of NAT, meaning that you will have some ugly double-NAT’ing going on
• Shared resource – more users means trouble
• Coverage (in terms of availability) needs to improve

If you’re going with Cisco or HP, you would have to spend at least about 3500 sek, or ~400 usd.

I think that there’s no reason to go with a 100 mbps switch, unless it’s only for training, like the Cisco 3550 – but I personally prefer to get as much usable equipment as possible, and put it in “production” at home.

But now I have come to realize that it’s not that easy. I’ve been replying to ads for the past 1,5 months, but everyone just seems to ignore my emails.

On a side note, not many people state their telephone no. in their ads. I’d rather call and get a quick response.

When moving, there is a couple of things I will need to sort out, that are very important to me:

• Electricity consumption
  - I consume a lot more electricity than the average 18 year old. Let’s just say that I have a high computer-per-capita rate. The required action from my side is to virtualize even more and get smaller (and amount of) machines.
• Computer noise
  - As I probably will have my computers (…servers…) closer to my bed, I don’t want them to make a lot of noise. I will need to swap out a couple of fans etc.
• Good internet connection
  - Most apartments are connected to Com Hem, which can deliver up to 200 mbps down and 10 mbps up, over coaxial cable. All my friends that have them as ISP has had problems, with both their service and the equipment they supply you with.
  - I’ve thought about getting a 4G connection, but the monthly limit of 80-100 GB and only 1 public IP-address is ridiculous.
• Cable management
  - No cables should be visible. Kind of. And it is doable.
• Networking
  - 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz wifi covering about 1 km radius outside of my apartment (joke).
  - Only gigabit wired.
  - No dumb switches. I’ve been looking at the layer 3 capable Mikrotik RB750GL.
  - Maybe a new router – Mikrotik RB45oG
• Washing machine.
  - I can’t stand more or less public laundry rooms, shared between the apartments.

I just started using this little neat device, as an access point for providing 5 GHz wifi to my macbook pro’s at home.

The first time I got to work with Ubiquiti equipment, was at the Peace and Love Festival 2011, and since then I have been reading and looking into all of their products, which indeed are very interesting – good performance  and low-cost!
I believe that Ubiquiti Networks has started of with really nice solutions.

Even though the antenna is fairly directional, I get a very good reception all over my house when it’s just hanging in the corner of one of the rooms here.

Streaming 1080p video (matroska, xvid, mpeg4) from my NAS over SMB works without problems.

The only real drawback is the 100 mbps RJ45 port, which limits the wireless speed of 300 mbps. Currently my macbook is connected with a transmit rate of 216 mbps, and I’m even on another floor in the opposite corner.

I applied for a volunteer position in [...]]]> From the 28th of june till the 2nd of july, Borlänge which is a medium-sized city about 250 kilometers northwest of Stockholm, will be filled up with tens of thousands of excited people from all over Sweden to enjoy performances and some good company. Ofcourse I’m going there.
